Our perception of Area of Refuge Communications has evolved over the past 30+ years, growing from a means for complying with older elevator communication codes to becoming its own entity in the eyes of the International Building Code (IBC), National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) and Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibilities Guidelines (ADAAG). These old elevator codes were more specifically integrated with the building fire alarm system or a dedicated system providing direct interaction with fire responders.
